A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national works. They were built at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
