Cameroon Political Opposition Figure Faces Legal Action Concerning Election Unrest, Government Announces

Political Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon show outrage that the president has won an eighth term

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has announced that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over allegations that he provoked "aggressive election protests".

No fewer than 4 protesters have been lost their lives during confrontations between law enforcement and demonstrators since Cameroon's election on 12 October, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya winning an eighth consecutive term.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he won the election, a statement disputed by the governing party, the ruling CPDM.

Forceful measures by police and security officers on demonstrators have alarmed the world leaders, with the United Nations, African Union and EU demanding caution.

Minister's Allegations

Recently, the interior minister accused Tchiroma Bakary of organising what he labeled "illegal" demonstrations causing the loss of lives, and also rebuked him for claiming win in the presidential race.

He added that Tchiroma Bakary's "accomplices behind an rebellious scheme" will also undergo judicial processes.

Election Results

Paul Biya, who took control in 1982 and is now the oldest serving president, secured the 12 October vote with a majority of the vote, compared to just over a third for Tchiroma Bakary, according to the electoral authority.

Leader's Stance

Tchiroma Bakary is yet to respond to the authorities' move to try him, but he had previously declared that he refused to acknowledge a stolen vote - and that he was undaunted of being detained.

When results were announced, he said that armed men opened fire on protesters gathered near his house in the city of Garoua, fatally wounding at least 2 civilians.

Probe Announced

Recently, the interior minister disclosed that an inquiry would be launched into violent incidents before and after the announcement of the poll figures.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the individuals involved were killed," he commented, without providing a precise figure of demonstrators who have been killed in the incidents.

Nji further mentioned that several officers of the police and military also received major harm.

Ongoing Circumstances

Although the interior minister asserted the situation throughout Cameroon was now under control, protesters are still demonstrating in certain regions of the country, especially in urban centers, where demonstrators set up obstructions on Tuesday, and burnt tires on the roads.

Experts caution that the political turmoil could plunge the nation into a political crisis.
