Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Group

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with rich lore, a diverse cast of heroes, and a thrilling plot including angels, fiends, and dark forces growing in strength within the urban setting.

Warning: Spoilers for the latest installment of this adventure are included.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

The third episode ended with a huge suspense moment and presented the first table of heroes who will branch out from the primary party to begin their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table includes Teor (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

With an extensive roster, it was evident from the start that having everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before branching into three smaller tables: Fighters, Planners, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

According to the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for players who prefer a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where diplomatic options are scarce.

Initially, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might look out of place, but the events of episode 3 make it clear why these five characters are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the group knows exactly where to go next after a brutal opening clash with the antagonists.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose death started the story’s plot—manipulated the foes for his personal gain, entering Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the powerful objects to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his obligations and escaped to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the companion and trusted friend, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having defied his family’s wishes to execute the fighter and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their status as important members in the powerful family could help the party reach places they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, Teor swore a life debt to The cleric for his rescue and will now go with him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

In addition, all of them are wanted by the authorities that govern Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The rogue and The character are known criminals.
  • The warrior and Wicander betrayed House Halovar and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the clan.

This means them few options but to head to the northern region in search of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

According to episode three’s follow-up content, we find out that the Soldiers table will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the players to form the Seekers and Strategists tables.

Audiences can look forward to finding out which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s concluding setup installment, released on the upcoming Thursday.
