The Trump movement's most revealing and characteristic moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of several weeks, the nation's leader began displaying all observers his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of deaths from his cuts to USAID amounts to 600,000 and growing, and recently a study forecast his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have dared – truly, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of multiple the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the world' into 'the humble will perish of cholera'
As disorienting as it is to observe the president try to upend the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who might not perceive it completely novel. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or nones. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is emphatically not the story of a powerful ruler arising; conversely, a baby is born to displaced parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to escape secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message is about love for other people, especially for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if a person pilfers your coat you must offer them your pullover also.
The apparent and straightforward reality that Christ from scripture advocates for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest Within Us
Hence I have become inspired to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to assist in constructing the initiative that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged citizens to turn out in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the highest qualities in US history.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or reject?
America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the highest about American history, similar to Christianity is best defended through connection to what makes it special and beautiful, which is the example of the Savior. In both situations does it imply pretending the most negative regarding America and Christianity was nonexistent; it represents both modesty and conviction, a combination that serious American Christians should embrace.
